Tech Math

OVERVIEW
Many skills are required to successfully complete the electrical apprenticeship program and be able to function as a competent Journeyman Electrician. One such skill is the ability to apply standard mathematics in the classroom as well as on the job. The Tech Math course provides a review of necessary mathematical skills which are crucial to anyone working in the electrical trade. Topics include operations with whole numbers, integers, fractions, decimals, ratios, exponents, and units and measurements.

TECH MATH COURSE SUMMARY

COURSE ASSIGNMENT & REGISTRATION FEE 
Tech Math is an assigned course. Active electrician apprentices are assigned to the Tech Math course. Each student must meet the registration requirements which includes a small registration fee. The approximate cost for the course is $169. The fee will be assessed and applied to the students account. The registration inovice can be accessed and paid on the students portal under BILL PAY. A registration notice will be given no less than one month before the start of class. Registration must be made on or before the communicated deadline.

CLASS DETAILS Tech Math Course
The course is comprised of eight (8) classes over 4 weeks. Classes are held on Monday and Thursday evenings from 5pm to 9pm at the training center. The first night includes general course orientation, account setup, and the Proficiency Exam. The last night of class, students who qualify, will take the Final Exam. All other class nights will incorporate lecture, knowledge assessment, and review of  new or previously covered material as related to the lessons of Tech Math (see syllabus below).

TECH MATH SYLLABUS

COURSE TOPICS
Topics inlcude whole numbers, fractions, decimals, integers, rational numbers, exponents, units and measurements, algebra essentials, equations, formulas and inequalities, ratios, rates and proportions, the cartesian plane, and systems of equations.

ATTENDANCE 
This course is a hybrid of synchronus / asychronus learning. Attendance is mandatory unless otherwise exempted based on proficiency exam performance. Students performance on the proficiency exam will determine whether in-person attendance is mandatory or optional for non-test class days. Unless exempt, all students are required to attend the first and last night of class. 

PROFICIENCY EXAM
Students scoring a 95% or higher on the proficiency exam are considered to have "tested out" and assume an "exempt" status. These students will be given full credit for passing Tech Math. No further attendance or testing required. 

Students scoring between 70% and 94% on the proficinecy exam will be given "optional" status. These students may attend scheduled classes though it is not mandatory, except for the last day of class. 

Students scoring less than 70% on the profieciency exam will be required to attend ALL scheduled classes. Attendance rules and policies would apply and the student subject to disciplinary action as a result.

HOMEWORK & ASSIGNMENTS
Completion of all lessons and homework as assigned is mandatory, unless exempted. All homework and assignments must be completed before the communicated due date. The deadline for completed assignments is specified in the Syllabus (see below). Homework found to be substantially incomplete will result in an absence. The student is expected to make all necessary arrangements to complete homework. Students are required to have reliable access to a mobile computing device such as a laptop or tablet (phones are not suitable devices). Students should also ensure access to a reliable internet connection. For the purpose of homework assignments, it is imparative each student budgets their time appropriately as it may take up to 2 hours per night to complete assignments. 

Course lessons must be completed and passed in sequence per the homework schedule (see below). You cannot advance in your assignments unless you have demonstrated mastery of the current topic. Once all topics have been completed, the student is then required to take and pass a "Pre-Exam". The pre-exam as a qualifier for the Final Exam. 

TECH MATH HOMEWORK SCHEDULE

PRE-EXAM
You must complete all lessons, in sequence, with satisfactory marks, in order to take the pre-exam. The pre-exam is a qualifier for the the Final Exam. This is a timed test and will be performed either as an offsite activity, or at the training center, depending on the students status. 

FINAL EXAM
This is a written  test which is administered at the training center on the last day of class. Apprentices will have 2 hours under test. Questions from each topic previously covered will be represented. This is a closed book test. Use of the assigned TI-30 calculator may be used but not required.

Apprentices are required to pass the Final Exam to pass Tech Math. Passing Tech Math is required to retain position in the program. In short, if the student fails Tech Math, they in turn,  will be terminated from the program and their indenture will be cancelled.

In order to sit for the Final Exam, the learner must complete all lessons and pass the pre-exam. If they do not complete all assignments and pass the pre-exam with a 75% or higher they will not be qualified to sit for the Tech Math Final. 

A score of 75% or higher shall constitute passing the Final Exam.

COURSE COMPLETION
A score of 95% and higher on the proficiency exam, or, a score of 75% or higher on the Tech Math Final is required to pass the Tech Math course.
